MWC 2026: Welcome to the IQ Era

MWC 2026: Welcome to the IQ Era

Mobile World Congress returned to Barcelona this week for its 20th edition, and the JCB Tough Phone team were thrilled to be in attendance. The message from the world's largest telecoms gathering could not have been clearer: the industry is no longer just connecting people — it is now in the business of intelligence. Under the banner of the “IQ Era,” more than 100,000 attendees descended on Fira Gran Via to debate, demo, and define what the next chapter of connectivity looks like.

AI Takes Centre Stage — Again, But Differently

If MWC 2025 was about AI ambition, MWC 2026 is about AI proof. The industry has heard enough about potential, now it wants results. A recurring phrase on the show floor this year was “return on intelligence,” and for good reason. According to research cited by Microsoft at the event, telecom operators are already seeing measurable returns of nearly 3x on generative and agentic AI investments, with leading operators achieving up to 5x. The message is clear: those who have moved decisively are pulling ahead, and the gap is widening.

Agentic AI — autonomous systems that can take actions, not just answer questions emerged as the breakout topic of the week. From automated network management to AI-powered customer service agents, telecoms are exploring how multi-agent systems can transform operations from the inside out. Industry analysts warned that this shift is a sprint, not a marathon: those who embrace it stand to gain an exponential innovation advantage.

5G Advanced and the Road to 6G

While 5G monetisation remains a live challenge for many operators, MWC 2026 signalled that the industry is already laying the groundwork for what comes next. Discussions around 5G Advanced — the enhanced iteration of the current standard — focused on private networks, edge AI, and mission-critical deployments for industries ranging from manufacturing to emergency services. Meanwhile, early 6G conversations centred on a pivotal architectural debate: should next-generation networks be built on general-purpose GPUs, or purpose-built telecoms chips? The answer will likely shape which companies lead the next decade of connectivity.

Satellites, Space, and Global Connectivity

Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) had a significant presence at this year’s show, reflecting growing momentum behind satellite-based connectivity. From bridging rural coverage gaps to enabling mission-critical communications in remote environments, space-borne networks are shifting from novelty to necessity. The question of open interoperability versus proprietary “walled gardens” in space infrastructure drew debate, with significant implications for how global connectivity evolves.

Sovereignty, Security, and the Regulatory Shadow

Behind the scenes, regulation loomed large. The European Commission’s draft Digital Networks Act generated considerable discussion inside meetings, with operators keen to influence the emerging framework before it is finalised. Cybersecurity was equally prominent: a new quantum, safe encryption solution was unveiled at the show, designed to protect telecom networks against the long-term threat of quantum computing. Geopolitical tensions were also visible, with several major European operators showcasing a federated edge computing initiative aimed at building regional digital sovereignty and reducing dependence on large American cloud providers.

From Connectivity to Intelligence: The Strategic Inflexion Point

Perhaps the most significant theme running through MWC 2026 was existential in nature. Traditional telcos face a defining fork in the road: remain focused on core connectivity and risk commoditisation, or transform into integrated digital service providers that leverage AI, data, and cloud to create value across industries. There is no comfortable middle ground. As one analyst put it, 2026 will be “a year of bold choices and relentless execution” and MWC made abundantly clear that the clock is already ticking.
